Turkish

Turkish is one of the Turkic languages that belong to the Altaic family of languages. Turkish is widely spoken and is the mother tongue of more than 80 million people. It is the official language of the Republic of Turkey and is also spoken by Turkish communities in other countries such as Cyprus, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. Turkish is also one of the official languages of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Modern Turkish uses the Latin alphabet with a few additional letters such as "ğ", "ş", "ç", "ö" and "ü". Before the introduction of the Latin alphabet in 1928, the Ottoman alphabet was used with Arabic characters.

Turkish has adopted many words from Persian, Arabic and French. Some Turkish words have been incorporated into other languages, especially the Balkan languages.
