Slovenian belongs to the South Slavic group of Slavic languages. Within this group, it shares its roots with other South Slavic languages such as Croatian and Serbian. Slovenian developed from West Slavic, and the oldest written records date back to the 16th century. The standardization of the language began in the 18th century.
