Serbian (српски језик) is a South Slavic language and a component of the Indo-European language family. As a their mother tongue, it is spoken by around 12 million people, mainly in Serbia, a country in south-eastern Europe. Serbian is also one of the official languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it is used alongside Bosnian and Croatian. Serbian is also spoken by Serbian communities in other countries such as Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia, Hungary and the Serbian diaspora.
The written Serbian language uses the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Although both alphabets are officially recognized, the Cyrillic alphabet is used more frequently.
Serbian also has several dialects that differ depending on the geographical region. The three main dialects are Štokavian, Torlakian and Kajkavian. The Štokavian dialect forms the basis for the standard language and is used in most media, education and government.
Serbian culture is rich in history, which is reflected in literature, music, art and folklore. Serbian folk music is known for its epic songs and instrumental music.
