Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language and belongs to the same language family as Finnish, Hungarian and other minor languages in the region. As a their mother tongue, it is spoken by around 1.1 million people, mainly in Estonia. There are also Estonian-speaking minorities in the neighboring countries of Finland, Russia, Latvia and Sweden. Estonian is also one of the official languages of the European Union.

Estonian uses the Latin alphabet with some specific letters such as "õ", "ä" and "ö". The Estonian alphabet comprises a total of 27 letters.

Estonian is closely linked to Estonian culture, which is rich in folklore, songs, dances and traditions. The Estonian singing tradition, especially lieder singing, is of particular importance and is part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage.
