Czech (čeština) is a West Slavic language and belongs to the Indo-European language family.  As a their mother tongue, it is spoken by around 12 million people, mainly in the Czech Republic, a Central European country.

Czech vocabulary has Slavic roots, but also influences from other languages such as Latin, German and French. There are also regional variations in vocabulary within the Czech language.

The Czech alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet with a few additional letters such as "č", "ě", "ř", "š", "ž", "ů" and "ú".

The Czech Republic has a diverse culture that is reflected in its art, music, architecture and traditional festivals. The country has a rich musical tradition with famous classical composers such as Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák. Czech literature has also gained international recognition with authors such as Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera and Bohumil Hrabal.
