Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by around 10 million people in Sweden and Finland as their mother tongue. Although the Swedish language is not as widely spoken as other languages, such as English or Spanish, it is still of important cultural significance. It is also recognized as one of the official languages of the European Union and is used in international organizations such as the UN, the OSCE and the Nordic Council. Swedish is the language of some of the world's most famous authors and important scientists, including Astrid Lindgren, August Strindberg, Alfred Nobel and Anders Celsius.
