Maltese script uses the Latin alphabet, but has some special features. It contains additional letters such as ċ, ġ, ħ, għ, ż, which do not occur in other Latin alphabet systems.

Although Maltese is the official language in Malta and is used in government documents, educational institutions, media and everyday communication, English is also widely spoken and is often used as a second language.
