French is a Romance language, spoken by over 300 million people worldwide as a mother tongue or second language. It developed from Vulgar Latin spoken by the Romans during their rule in Gaul (today's France). It is the official language in France, Canada (especially in the province of Québec), Belgium, Switzerland, some African countries and former French colonies.

French is written using the Latin alphabet. It contains 26 letters, including diacritical marks such as accents, circumflexes and cedillae.

French is considered a language of diplomacy, art, fashion and gastronomy. It is also one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union and other international organizations.
