Dutch developed from Low Franconian, one of the Germanic languages. It is the official language of the Netherlands, Belgium (especially in Flanders) and Suriname. It is also spoken by Dutch minority groups in other countries.

Dutch uses the Latin alphabet with 26 letters. It also contains the letters ä, ö, ü and the double vowel ij, which is considered an independent letter.

The Dutch vocabulary has influences from Low Franconian, Latin, French and English. Many words in Dutch are also similar to words in the neighboring German and Scandinavian languages.

The Netherlands has a rich culture, whether in art with celebrities such as Vincent van Gogh or with its world-renowned cheese.
