Catalan (Català) is a Romance language spoken mainly in Catalonia, an autonomous community in north-eastern Spain. It is also an official language in Andorra, a small independent principality located between Spain and France. Catalan is also spoken in some parts of Valencia, the Balearic Islands and the Roussillon region in France.

There are around 10 million native speakers of Catalan, making it the sixth most spoken language in Spain.

The Catalan alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet, but contains some additional letters such as "ç" and "l-l". The vocabulary of Catalan has influences from Latin, but also from other languages such as French, Spanish and Arabic. There are also regional variations in vocabulary within the Catalan language.
