Persian Translation

Persian

Persian is an Indo-Iranian language and is spoken by around 110 million people as their mother tongue. It is mainly spoken in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Persian vocabulary has its roots in Middle Persian and Old Persian and was influenced by contact with other languages. A large part of the modern Persian vocabulary also contains loaned words from Arabic, Turkish, French and English.

There are various regional dialects of Persian, which can differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Main dialects include the Tehran dialect, the Isfahan dialect and the Dari dialect in Afghanistan.

Persian script uses the Arabic alphabet with some additional letters to represent specific Persian sounds that do not exist in Arabic. The Persian alphabet has 32 letters and is written from right to left.

In Persian culture, calligraphy is held in high esteem. Persian calligraphy is often used to depict poems, religious texts, prayers and other written documents.
